Finale: Ten Things I Need to Know About the Pirates
I’ve used this list of ten questions on a couple of occasions this spring; let’s check in one last time to see if we learned anything about the Bucs. To make a long story short, I’ve excerpted my previous comments: You can find the original list here and the first update here.

Read moreBob Smizik and the 1987 Pirates
I’m somewhat optimistic about the 2007 Pirates to be respectable. But optimism for me is a birth defect. I can’t do anything about it.
So, I read with interest Bob Smizik’s recent column comparing the 2007 Pirates with the 1987 Pirates. That 1987 club went on to win 80 games and give people hope after some [...]
Kolb Cut, Bayliss In: Breaking Down the Pen
Dejan dropped the ax this morning:
Dan Kolb will not make the Pirates’ bullpen.
Management informed him late last night that it would not place him on the 25-man roster by the midnight deadline stipulated in his minor-league contract, and Kolb will exercise his right in that contract to declare free agency today.
And the makeup of the [...]
Spring Training Update: Bucs vs. Reds, Phils; Breaking Down the Cuts
Yesterday, the Reds used back-to-back homers by Adam Dunn and Edwin Encarnacion to beat Zach Duke and the Pirates, 6-4. Today, Ryan Howard and Pat Burrell went back-to-back off Shawn Chacon.
If you’re a Post-Gazette subscriber, you know that the pre-season coverage is coming on full blast from now until Monday. For you online [...]
Pittsburgh Pirates Roundtable #27
This is the 27th edition of Pittsburgh Pirates Roundtable, a bi-weekly collaboration of Pirates writers and thinkers from around the Internet. If youd like to submit a question to our panel, or if youre interested in learning more about participating, e-mail the moderator here.
Question #1:
If you were Dave Littlefield, what would you have done with [...]
Since You've Been Gone
A quick scan of the baseball news over the last couple of days brought me face-to-face with a couple of stories about ex-Buccos. One memorable. One not so much.
According to this story, Craig Wilson hasn’t toned down the personality that angered Pirates front office personnel.
And, surprisingly, Victor Santos has enjoyed a nice Spring with the [...]
The Starting Rotation: What Can We Expect?
A few days ago in the comments, Vaughn made a claim that was music to my ears:
Pretty much all of those minor league numbers [posted by the Pirates' starting pitchers] are sick. Weve got quite a quartet here, and [Sean] Burnett could join them. This is how franchises are built, around the rotation, and weve [...]
More Players Cut as Opening Day Approaches
As Cory mentioned below, both the Post-Gazette and Trib-Review are reporting that Josh Sharpless has been assigned to AAA.
Also gone are Einar Diaz and Mike Ryan.
Sharpless posted a low ERA in Spring but walked more hitters than he struck out (8 to 7) in 8 games pitched.
Ryan hit the ball well, but at 29 is [...]
Spring Training Game 29: Bucs/Sox Live Thread
Dejan’s recap at the P-G: “Armas, Paulino spur Pirates past Red Sox, 3-2.” Good to have him back. Paul Meyer just doesn’t do it for me.
—-
Heading into the seventh inning stretch, it’s the Pirates on top, 3-2. Armas went 5.2, allowing 5 hits, 2 earned runs and 2 walks. He [...]
