2008 Preview – Andrew McCutchen

Top prospect Andrew McCutchen hit his first hurdle in 2007. Beginning the season at Double-A Altoona, he struggled badly from the start. As the season continued, his play improved and his numbers slowly increased. However, he was still only at .258/.327/.383 in early August. Despite the fact that McCutchen had not [...]

Going to the Game

What an amazing confluence of coincidence! I am in the Tampa area today (and yesterday as well) for some meetings and in between my last meeting and my flight back to New York City there is a long wait. The Bucs are playing the Phillies today in Clearwater and that happens to be where my [...]

Please stand, and gentlemen please remove your hats, as we honor America

It is time. Today, the Pirates will play a baseball game. Yes, it is only an exhibition against Manatee Community College. Yes, we are dangerously close to setting the all-time record for sports futility. But when Yoslan Herrera delivers his first pitch in just a few minutes, none of that will [...]

The Catcher Situation

There is a lot of buzz on the Piratenet over the weekend about how much work Ryan Doumit is putting in behind the plate. Juxtapose that with how it seems that the Bucs are trying to hide the work of Ronny P and you have the makings of a grand conspiracy. As loathe as I [...]

Ollie Wins Arbitration

It has been a good week to be a former Pirate pitcher. Shawn Chacon, Josh Fogg and now Oliver Perez have gotten paid. Perez beat the Mets at arbitration and will make $6.5 million in 2008. Most of that link talks about Johan Santana and not about Ollie.
Perez won’t be 27 until August of 2008. [...]

Nobody is going to confuse Fogg [...]

The Best Game Ever by Jim Reisler

Spring Training has opened up, yet my house in Dayton, OH was hit by six inches of snow, give or take. In protest, I shoveled my driveway while wearing my 1972 era mustard color Bucco cap and thought happy thoughts about championships past.
The story of the 1960 World Series is well known by all who [...]

Pirates sign Byung-Hyun Kim

The Pirates signed right-handed pitcher Byung-Hyun Kim today. Financial details have not been announced, but apparently it is a Major League deal. Overall, Kim posted a 6.08 ERA and a 1.68 WHIP with the Rockies, Diamondbacks and Marlins in 2007. He made 28 appearances, including 22 starts. His last good season [...]

2008 Preview – Steve Pearce

Most would agree that the Pirates need to rebuild for the future. Their current team is not built to succeed in the short or long term, and there is not much coming up through the farm system to rejuvenate this sputtering roster. With many players in the starting lineup growing older and due [...]

The Pitch – 2008 Preview

The Pitch on MVN Radio is moving through Major League Baseball previewing all 30 teams, and today it was the PiratesÂ’ turn. I had the honor of joining hosts Brandon Rosage and Joe Aiello to discuss the teamÂ’s chances for this season, and as you might expect, it was not very optimistic. Take [...]
