We aren't the children of the night
While listening to this afternoon’s nail biter, I noticed an interesting split in day vs. night games over on David Pinto’s Baseball Musings blog:
In day games, the Pirates are scoring 5.7 rpg (40 runs in 7 games) ~ but at night, they’re averaging 3.9 rpg.
We need to start having lights malfunction more at PNC [...]
Game #27 at New York Mets
Shea Stadium | 1:10 | Gorzelanny vs. Oliver Perez | Box
This one was over early after a delay, as Matt noted in the comments. The Bucs knocked Oliver Perez from the game in the second thanks in large part to Ollie’s wildness and some sloppy D from the Metropolitans.
As has been the case all season, [...]
I'm still here
Sorry for the lack of posting this month folks. I have been really slammed with work and have not had the time to focus on our Buccos. I’ll be writing more about my thoughts on the Pirates season so far later today.

“It’s so bad, it’s almost beautiful.” These words were uttered by Rocco DeMaro during the Pirates’ postgame show Saturday night. The Bucs lost that game 8-4, behind Matt Morris’ discouraging final start in a Pirate uniform and three errors in the field. But Rocco’s remark was not in reference to the ugly game [...]

Shea Stadium | 7:10 | Snell vs. Johan Santana | Box
They got one in tonight at Shea. The Pirates made a late inning comeback but fell short in extra frames.
Ian Snell was a bit uneven and was done in partly by some faulty defense. He walked five hitters in 4-1/3 innings of effort. He gave [...]
Notes from the 2008 Road Trip to Pittsburgh – Day 2
Day 1 ended with the not so exciting Matt Morris start and the over hyped NFL draft analysis taking center stage on the sports shows.
Day 2 arrived the way it always had: waking up and moseying down the street to the 7-11 that is on the corner around the way from the Renaissance to pick [...]
Game #25 vs. Philadelphia
PNC Park | 1:35 | Maholm vs. Brett Myers | Box
Not sure what was more unlikely:
A. Paul Maholm firing a complete game two hitter or
B. Me seeing a Philly fan in a Jim Eisenreich jersey on the concourse at PNC
Both happened.
What a great day to be at the ballyard. As Chris pointed out in the [...]
The Pirate career of Matt Morris may be over
It appears that Matt Morris is on his way out of the Pirates’ rotation, and may be done with the team as well. The Post-Gazette has not confirmed the team’s exact plans, but John Van Benschoten will likely be recalled from Triple-A today. I would expect him to take Morris’ starting spot, though [...]

My brother and I are out on our annual trek to Pittsburgh. Here are some roughly chronological notes:
We pitstopped on our drive across I-70 at the Ohio Valley Mall in St. Clairsville. We noticed as we walked into a number of stores the lack of Pirate related items. Steelers, Pitt, Penguins, WVA, OSU, but not [...]
Game #24 vs. Philadelphia
PNC Park | 7:05 | Morris vs. Kyle Kendrick | Box
Unfortunately, this was another typical Matt Morris start. He didn’t make it out of the second inning and the Pirates were buried early. Kyle Kendrick was effective, being chased after allowing a couple runners on base in the 8th.
Brian Bixler committed a pair of errors, [...]
